Beam me back, Scotty....

We are going to borrow Star Trek technology to magically (temporarily) transport us from France to Southern Maryland to catch up on a few local restaurant things, most of which involve the word “new”.  I’ll try to be brief (hard for me!) and then we can go back to France.   I have to admit that I am having a hard time letting that go, I hope you are not becoming bored..  Anyway I am probably behind the curve on a lot of these things but here goes in no particular order:

On a Mission

This is a bit shorter notice than I had wished, but the new barbeque place in San Souci is about to open.  As seems to be the custom, new restaurants “practice” before opening to the general masses with a “soft opening” where all of the proceeds go to some local charity.  According to their website, the Mission Barbeque people are very supportive of public servants and service people.   So TONIGHT they are doing their soft opening (6 to 9) and all proceeds are going to the “Shop with a Cop” program, a very local and worthwhile charity.  A good chance to check out a new “que” place and support a good cause.  BBQ is another of those foods that seemingly people can’t get enough of.  Pizza, Chinese, no limit to the places..  seemingly.

Oodles of Noodles

There is a new link in the chain appearing across from the California WaWa by the Buffalo Wing place.  Another franchise operation, Noodles & Company will be opening beside the nail place.  They advertise themselves as “your world kitchen” and feature dishes made with pasta/noodles from Asia, Europe, and even Wisconsin (Mac and Cheese).  I am sure they did their demographic analysis, but within maybe a mile (?) radius, similar food can be found at Golden Chicken, Pepperoni’s, Thai Inter, Teariffic, China (something) II, Asahi, Jerry’s, and probably others I have forgotten.. And I suppose the same rule will apply that seems to hold everywhere around here:  Day One: Open; Day Two: Parking lot jammed.

The Speakeasy

While it has been reported here before, the Coffee Quarter in Leonardtown has changed to the BTB Coffee Bar, with a new and unique concept.  There is now a very much smaller area in front where the usual coffee drinks are dispense with not enough seating.  But they have partitioned off the back of the store with a “bookcase” and (get this) Behind The Bookcase is where the “speakeasy” is.  They serve drinks there now, although it is only open from 5 on (to 10 weekdays and 12 weekends).  I stopped in for coffee yesterday, and peeked in the back room.  It is very nicely done, leather, wood, and would be a pleasant place to have a drink.  Will test that out soon(ish).  I did get a look at the menu, and I guess I would say it reflects the character of the owner (Brad Brown).   Every item (key word every) has a little description (okay) but also generally a little joke – on the shrimp cocktail ($13):  All the mobsters love it, you better too…. Or else!  A bit cutesy for my taste but you know me..  Has promise..

Roll Tide

There have been management changes and a new menu at the Tides.  The Feeder has not had time to visit it yet..

Rock On

MFO (did I tell you this?) visited the new Striped Rock on the Solomons.  The newly renovated downstairs is open, but the upstairs will be a while yet.  The casual dining downstairs space is quite pleasant with a very nice bar.  There are quite a few hard surfaces, so don’t know how the noise level will work out.   We only had drinks as the air conditioning was having issues (since fixed) so no read on the food.  The menu was fairly standard for a seafood themed place.  Will look for the more formal upstairs this fall.

The Old Evan’s

Slated to open soon, a new resident will move into the “old Evan’s” down on St. Georges Island.  No matter what it is called, it always seems to be referred to (at least by most countians) as “the old Evan’s”.  The place will be called “The Ruddy Duck Seafood and Ale House”. Somehow latter proprietors seem to come up with multi word titles of the place.  Anyway, as the name implies, the folks from the Ruddy over on the Solomons will be bringing their great brews and food down to St. Georges Island.  Most people know that place is overseen by Michael and Lisa Kelley, who know their way around food and restaurants.  Don’t have an opening date for it yet, but it should be worth the drive.

Okay, that’s it.  Tomorrow (?) we’ll go back to France and the Medieval Village of Noyers..  mean while, go
